EU Scientific Assessment Supports Proposed Updates to MRLs Across Multiple Crops

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has released a scientific assessment supporting proposed modifications to maximum residue levels (MRLs) for a fungicidal active substance across a wide range of agricultural crops. This assessment forms part of the European Union’s established regulatory process to ensure food safety standards remain aligned with current agricultural practices.

The evaluation covers multiple crop groups, including pome fruits, stone fruits, cucurbit vegetables with edible and inedible peel, and rice. EFSA based its assessment on residue trial data submitted by EU Member States, combined with updated dietary exposure models reflecting consumption patterns across different population groups.

Both acute and chronic consumer exposure scenarios were evaluated using toxicological reference values and metabolic data. EFSA concluded that residues resulting from applications compliant with good agricultural practice are unlikely to pose a risk to consumer health.

EFSA emphasized that its conclusions represent a scientific risk assessment and do not automatically lead to regulatory amendments. Final decisions regarding any MRL updates will be made by the European Commission and EU Member States, taking into account enforcement, trade, and policy considerations.

For exporters and agricultural input suppliers, potential MRL changes may affect compliance documentation, monitoring programs, and quality control procedures for products destined for the EU market.
