SCALES OFF - Effective Scale Insects Killer

Overview of Scale insects

Scale insects are one of the most annoying pests. They are sap-feeding insects named for the scale or shell-like waxy covering that conceals their bodies.

Most Scale insects are very small, usually ranging in size from 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. However, you will never see just one of them, which makes them hard to miss. Scales almost always appears in clusters.

Scale insects have two categories: Soft scales and Armored scales.

Soft scales have the soft, thin, cottony, powdery or waxy layer over their bodies

Produce the sticky substance known as honeydew

Armored scales have waxy, hard, shield-like cover detached from their bodies. Don’t produce honeydew.

Scale insects have a simple life: Eggs, Nymphs (Crawlers) and Adults

Eggs hatch into tiny crawlers, and typically develop through two nymphal instars (growth stages) before maturing into an adult. Each instar can change greatly.

Hazards of Scales insects

Damage caused by Scale insects

Scale insects can be found on plant stems, twigs, trunks, foliage, or fruit to weaken and even kill trees, shrubs and houseplants.

They can cause big economic loss by reducing yield, quality and marketability.

Hazards caused by Honeydew of Scale insects

While feeding, Soft Scale insects excrete a sweet, sticky substance called honeydew. Honeydew attracts flies, ants, bees, and other insect scavengers. Honeydew encourages a fungus called sooty mold and make plant black, “sooty” appearance. Honeydew make the plant appear shiny and wet and can foul sidewalk, cars, and houses beneath scale-infested trees.

How to get rid of Scale insects?

Biological control of Scale insects

Beneficial insects such as soldier beetles, lady beetles, and parasitic wasps can be an important and effective control for Scale insects. Biological control can control pests without polluting the environment. However, you have to face the problem of high prices and slow results.

Mechanical control of Scale insects

For light infestations, mechanical removal may be the best control option. Using a knife or brush, gently scrape off each Scale insect that you see.

For heavily infested stems can be pruned out and discarded to reduce scale populations.

Chemical Control of Scale insects

Insecticide applications may be warranted when natural enemies and mechanical controls are not sufficient to prevent plant injury. But Scale insects are difficult to control as the scale and waxy covering protect them effectively from contact insecticides.
