Biostimulants-New Trends in Agriculture
Biostimulants have long been associated with organic or organic farming. And now they play a very important role in conventional agriculture as a supplement to nutrition and crop protection.
What are Biostimulants?
“Biostimulant” is defined in the 2018 Farm Bill as “a substance or microorganism that, when applied to seeds, plants, or on the rhizosphere, stimulates natural processes to enhance or benefit nutrient uptake, nutrient use efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress, or crop quality and yield.”
What are the types of Biostimulants?
Humic and fulvic acids.
These acids are produced naturally in the soil due to the decomposition of organic matter.
Protein hydrolysates.
These include small peptides and amino acids, which are the building blocks of all proteins.
Seaweed and plant extracts.
Seaweed extracts may contain small amounts of nutrients and plant hormones, such as cytokinins. Plant extracts may contain substances that stimulate the plant's metabolism or natural defense system. The exact chemical composition of these extracts is usually unknown.
Chitosan and other biopolymers.
A "biopolymer" is a specific molecule derived from a plant or animal source; for example, chitosan is derived from the shell of a crustacean.
Inorganic compounds.
These are mineral-based molecules (e.g., phosphites) and trace elements (e.g., silicon).
Beneficial microorganisms.
The action of these products is based on the activity of live fungi and/or bacteria.
What are the benefits of Biostimulants?
For Crops
Improving plant nutrient use efficiency
Plant biostimulants help plants to obtain and utilize more nutrients and apply them to the soil:
Provide additional beneficial microorganisms to the soil environment
Promotes early crop root growth
Root stimulating substances for root production
Improving crop resilience to climate
Plant biostimulants help crops adapt to climate change by making them more resilient to abiotic stresses, including climatic shocks such as floods, droughts and temperature extremes, for example:
Some biostimulant products promote plant root growth and improve access to water even in drought conditions;
Plants with heat tolerance are better able to withstand heat waves and start growing more quickly when temperatures drop.
Protecting crops from abiotic stresses also reduces the chances of crops falling prey to opportunistic pests or diseases
Enhance soil health
By enriching the microbial diversity of soils, microbial plant biostimulants help improve soil fertility, health and structure for plant growth and climate resilience.
Soil health is critical not only for sustainable food production but also for the ability of agricultural soils to store carbon.
Improved resource efficiency
Many plant biostimulants are derived from secondary feedstocks such as plant, algae and animal by-products from different value chains.
This industrial symbiosis helps to improve resource efficiency at the system level.
For Sustainable Agriculture
Biostimulants are helping to address some of the biggest challenges facing global agriculture in the coming years.
To feed a growing population, crop yields and quality need to be improved, and this is what biostimulants encourage. Extreme temperatures, water scarcity, salinity and other stresses associated with climate change require resistant crops. Biostimulants increase the tolerance of plants to the adverse effects of abiotic stresses.
Biostimulants can improve product quality parameters. Higher quality means higher profits for farmers and healthier, more nutritious food for consumers.
For Farmers' income
Biostimulants help increase farmers' profits and help ensure that crops actually use chemical fertilizers.
Biostimulants help reduce waste throughout the agricultural food chain. Less waste means lower costs, which ultimately benefits consumers, who have access to high-quality, affordable food.
When the quality of the crop improves, farmers also get a higher price. Improved quality has a positive impact on storage and preservation, giving farmers more time to choose the best time to sell their crops at a favorable price.
