THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL SUGGESTION AGAINST FALL ARMYWORM (Spodoptera Frugiperda)
In 2024, Fall armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda) is expected to occur in an area of 45 million acres across the country in China. This suggestion plan is aimed to provide guidance for the prevention and control of Fall armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda).
Firstly, strengthen monitoring and early warning is recommended. Make full use of insect radar, high-altitude reporting lights, insect traps and hormone traps to monitor the migration dynamics and numbers of adult insects. Focusing on main crops, such as corn, sugar cane, sorghum as its hosts, then field surveys at the seedling stage and leaf stage are needed for early detection and early treatment.
Then, main measures are suggested into five parts:
ECOLOGICAL REGULATION
For better biodiversity in the crop planting, choosing the seeds with insect-resistant varieties, and cultivate sweet corn or other crops as trap on the edges of the fields for centralized traps and control.
SEED TREATMENT
Choose insecticide containing Chlorantraniliprole, thiamethoxam as seed treatment to prevent and control Fall armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda) in the seedling stage.
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL TRAPS
When the emergence of adult insects, light lures, hormone traps, and food lures are recommended. In contiguous planting areas, hormone traps (15-20 traps per ha) should be used to trap and kill adult insects throughout the growth period. Make sure to adjusting the height of the trap as the crops growing, and replace the lure in time to ensure the control effect.
BIOLOGICAL CONTROL
Natural enemies are recommended, such as Braconid wasps and predatory natural enemies such as spiders and lacewings. To release Telenomus remus Nixon, Trichogramma chilonis, etc. when the egg stage of Fall armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda). And apply biopesticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus, metarhizium anisopliae, beauveria bassiana, azadirachtin, or release predatory natural enemies, such as stink bugs and beetles for continuous controlling on population of Fall armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda) larvae.
CHEMICAL CONTROL
Focus on the treatment of eggs and insects for protection of seedlings, main leaves, and fruit ears, Chlorantraniliprole, Tetrachlorantraniliprole, Lufenuron, Spinosad, etc. are recommended to tank mixing with reasonable adjuvants. And we should pay attention to the rotational use and safe use of pesticides with different mode of action for ideal control effects.
